Unlike other categories of leather, full-grain leather uses only the hide taken from just below the hair of the animal. Nothing is done to alter or change the product. This results in a hide that reflects the unadulterated character of the leather. By contrast, corrected grain leather products are buffed or sanded to produce a uniformity to the finish. Corrected grain items may appear to be cleaner or prettier, but are also less durable than products made from full-grain leather. The tightness of full grain leather in its native form makes it naturally resistant to moisture. And since the grain surface is left intact, its fiber strength is increased, thus significantly extending the lifespan of the product.
Full-grain leather looks real... feels real... and smells real. That is the beauty of it. We are not perfect individuals and neither are the animals from which our leather is sourced. Whether cattle, goat, sheep, or bison, the visual aesthetic of the hide reflects the authentic and individual character of its source.
The quality of full-grain leather is the unhidden evidence of what occurs during the animal's life. This includes fat wrinkles, growth lines, shading, and scars. Each hide is unique and made even more so when handled over time. Leather develops a rich sheen or gloss, known as a patina, which is a result of leather absorbing the oils from our fingers and interacting with other variables in our environment such as moisture, heat, and sunlight. The more a bag is handled affects the degree to which the patina of the leather develops. Just like the story of our lives is shaped by the ups and downs of our experiences, the bag you carry is shaped by your day to day life experience.
